Pappy had been stationed on Woodlark Island for 7 ½ months. It had been hot and humid and dangerous the whole time. The sailors thought it was nice weather if it only rained two or three times a day! After a while, supplies began to run low. The men had to eat spam for breakfast, spam for lunch and spam for dinner. Spam, spam, spam! They were sure sick of spam! One of the sailors told Pappy that one evening he’d seen a wild boar in the jungle. Pappy and his friends talked about how good it would be to have a roast pig for dinner instead of spam. They decided to try to hunt for the wild boar the next time they had a day off. The men got together and went into the jungle to try to find the wild boar. They really weren’t supposed to go into the jungle away from their base because it was very dangerous. One of the men thought he had found pig tracks, so they all followed the trail deeper and deeper into the jungle. They walked quietly for several hours when all of a sudden, the wild boar dashed out from under some plants and ran right at the men. One by one they dove out of its path and it disappeared into the dense jungle. At least now they were sure there was a wild boar on the island and that made the spam seem even worse than before. The next time the sailors had a day off, they went back into the jungle to track the wild boar again. They were very quiet and had to listen for the enemy as well as for wild animals. Suddenly, one of Pappy’s friends began to wave his arm to the other men. Up ahead was the wild boar eating some plants. So far, he hadn’t seen the men. One sailor raised his rifle and took aim just as the boar looked up and began to charge at the men. The sailor pulled the trigger and shot the wild boar right in the chest. “Hooray!” the men whooped. “No spam tonight!” They tied the boar’s legs together and dragged it back to the camp. The cook came over with a big knife and cut the boar open. It was full of worms! Everybody was very quiet at dinner that night, eating their spam.
