Pappy was not an old man. He was a young man and he lived with his mother and three brothers and one little sister in a little gray house in Chicago. Pappy was the oldest brother and helped to take care of his family. He had graduated from high school and got a job in a bank. On weekends he liked to play baseball. Pappy was the best left-handed pitcher in the neighborhood. One day enemy airplanes bombed an American seaport in Hawaii. This was very bad and a lot of nice people were hurt and killed. Our country decided to go to war against the enemy. Pappy decided to join the Navy and help fight in the war. The Navy is the part of our Armed Forces that fight on the ocean with big ships. Pappy thought it would be exciting to go to sea on a big ship and sail all over the world. He said goodbye to his mother and three brothers and one little sister and signed up to join the Navy. Pappy’s mother got a picture of a star and put it in her front window. The star meant she had a son in the war. One by one Pappy’s three brothers joined the war, too. One joined the Air Force. One joined the Army. And one joined the Marines. Soon Pappy’s mother had one little daughter and four stars in her front window.
